Orangutan's chemotherapy treatment for cancer ends

MIAMI (AP) ? Peanut, an 8-year-old orangutan with cancer and one of the star attractions at Miami's Jungle Island, no longer needs chemotherapy, her medical team announced Tuesday.

Peanut had been undergoing chemotherapy since August, following a diagnosis of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. After three courses of combination chemo-immunotherapy, her doctors decided it was time to wrap up her treatments for the aggressive lymphoma.

Although Peanut was not the first great ape to be treated for cancer like a human, experts said it is not common to use chemotherapy among orangutans.

Dr. Jason Chatfield, curator and staff veterinarian for Jungle Island, said the stress of "multiple immobilizations" for the treatment was a factor in a decision to end her chemotherapy. He added she received an adequate amount of chemotherapy.

"What we do know is that without this chemotherapy, Peanut would not survive," Chatfield said.

But he cautioned that imaging and scans used to gauge the effectiveness of chemotherapy in humans isn't available in Peanut's case, making it "next to impossible" to tell how effective the treatment was for the orangutan.

Now her medical team will closely monitor Peanut's daily progress and check for signs of relapse. And as part of her annual medical exam, doctors will also include diagnostic imaging such as a CT scan, radiology and ultra sound.

Peanut and her fraternal twin, Pumpkin, were born in captivity. They came to Jungle Island when they were 6 months old. The youngest of six orangutans there, the two have been a hit with park visitors, using sign language and an iPad to communicate with their trainers. The park has posted regular updates of Peanut's treatments on its main web page and on Facebook.

Peanut was diagnosed after her veterinary team found she had an intestinal obstruction and further testing revealed the cancer. Pumpkin has not been diagnosed with the disease.

The Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, along with UM's Division of Comparative Pathology, which specializes in wildlife, confirmed the diagnosis.

Doctors chose a plan for treatment that has been most effective in humans.

"Peanut has handled this process with remarkable strength and fortitude," Chatfield said. "We have learned a great deal in the process and endeavored to provide Peanut with state-of-the-art care and the best possible chance at long term survival."

Peanut and her twin, Pumpkin, will celebrate their birthday on Dec. 2 with orangutan-friendly cakes. The park also will serve cake to guests and hand out lime green ribbons for lymphoma awareness. A portion of the day's admission also will be donated to the cancer center involved in the ape's treatment.

Online tools make Sandy fundraising easier

Crowdrise

Journalist Anick Jesdanun's fundraising page on Crowdwise, which is also social network for raising money.

By Anick Jesdanun, AP

Superstorm Sandy convinced me that I should do something new: raise money toward hurricane relief. If it weren't for the ease of nudging my friends and family to contribute by way of social media and online fundraising tools, I'm not sure I would have done it. I do know that I wouldn't have been as successful.

I have regularly donated in the past, particularly when people I know are raising money for cancer research, youth programs and other charities in connection with a marathon, a triathlon or some other big event. But I've never raised money myself. I didn't want to feel as if I had to run because I was trying to raise money, or that I had to raise money to guarantee a spot in a sold-out running event. I wanted to keep the two completely separate.

The storm that devastated my city and lots more up and down the East Coast changed my thinking.

The Sunday after Sandy made landfall two weeks ago, I was supposed to run my 50th marathon in New York, 10 years to the weekend since I had run my first marathon, also in New York. It would have been a celebratory affair. Then Sandy came along, and after days of intense debate, the marathon was abruptly canceled. I channeled my energies instead toward raising money for relief.

Of the several sites I could have used to organize my fundraising campaign, I chose Crowdrise because I could link my efforts with a broader campaign by the marathon's organizers to turn the event into a Race to Recover. These and other sites make it easy to choose a charity to support and send appeals to friends and family. The sites handle the credit card transactions and tax receipts, and they forward the money to the charities, after taking out processing fees.

After signing up for a free Crowdrise account, it became clear it wasn't just a fundraising site, but a social network for raising money. When you join a cause, you are grouped into a team with others. Those teams are grouped into larger campaigns ? in my case, the New York Road Runners' efforts to raise hurricane-relief money for a dozen local and national charities.

The money I raised was added to the team totals, so I could see the cumulative impact of our individual efforts. Some campaigns let you see their totals, too. A few thousand dollars might be a drop in the bucket, but the millions collectively raised by people like me made a bigger difference. I could browse the site to see what strangers supporting my cause were doing. I could also see what other causes they were raising money for, whether related to Sandy relief or not.

If you're thinking of getting involved, for Sandy relief, cancer research or any other cause, here are some tips. Many of these steps also apply if you're using other fundraising sites, such as FirstGiving and Razoo.

Razoo

Razoo is one of several sites where you can organize fundraising efforts to help those hurt by Superstorm Sandy.

Create or join a cause
To get started, I simply visited the New York Road Runners' Crowdrise page for Sandy relief. I could make a donation without signing up if that was all I wanted to do. I simply had to pick which of the dozen charities should get my funds and provide credit card information.

Because I wanted to raise money myself, I created an account and browsed through the listed charities. Some were devoted to restoring parks after the storm. Others were targeted at feeding people or rescuing animals. A few were broad relief organizations, such as the American Red Cross. I chose a local group that would disperse funds to where the needs are, The Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City.

The process is similar for other groups and events. United Airlines and the Equinox gym, for instance, are running similar campaigns for Sandy relief. You can create your own fundraising campaign as part of a 30th birthday celebration or a bike trip across the country ? people you know would try to raise money for your selected cause, not your bike trip! There's even one connected to a college football game next weekend between archrivals USC and UCLA (in that case, for cancer research).

If I weren't already part of an event, I could have simply clicked "I'm a Fundraiser" to search for a cause and raise money as an individual. Crowdrise already has a list of more than 1 million recognized charities, using a database from GuideStar, a research organization specializing in nonprofits. It won't let me create and raise money for a Buy Me a New iPad charity. For that, I'd need Kickstarter, Indiegogo and others that emphasize fundraising for personal projects.

Send out appeals
You're given a fundraising Web page, where you can describe the need and make your plea in your own words. Too lazy? Simply keep what's already there. You can also add photos ? such as those showing the devastation left in Sandy's path.

Crowdrise has a bunch of tools for sending out appeals using Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or plain old email. I ended up posting my own links on Facebook because Crowdrise's 420-character limit conflicted with my tendency to ramble. For Twitter posts, Crowdrise's tool would shorten it further to comply with Twitter's 140-character limit. Those limits do not apply to email, but a test message through Crowdrise's system ended up in Hotmail's junk folder. No, thanks.

I encouraged my friends and family to spread the word, even if they weren't able to give themselves. Many contributions came in that way, as people reposted links on Facebook or got in touch with others through email. I reconnected with a college classmate in the process and saw contributions from a friend's dad and from someone who used to babysit me as a toddler.

As my direct appeals (read: spamming) faded, I simply added a link to the bottom of my outgoing emails. It's there as a reminder, but also out of the way.

Track your progress
Donations trickled in following my various appeals. Crowdrise sent me a notification each time and recommended "dropping everything you're doing so you can send a personal thank you."

From your account, you simply hit a "Send Thank You" link next to each donor's name. There's a "Thank All Donors" list, too, if you're lazy. I preferred the personal touch. In some cases, I sent thanks through email or Facebook instead, though Crowdrise won't mark those people on your list as already thanked. (FirstGiving and Razoo send automated thank-you notices, though you may personalize those automated messages.)

I initially set a goal of raising $1,285, or $26.22 for each of the 49 marathons I had run (26.22 is the number of miles in a marathon to two decimal points). An orange bar on my fundraising page showed how close I was to the goal. I hit that in four days and increased the goal to $2,622. I returned to the site now and then to check on my progress.

Network and give
Once I hit that initial goal, I started responding to other appeals on Crowdrise. I gave to one friend's campaign for the American Red Cross and to another for a Brooklyn group that was trying to recover from the storm in time to serve Thanksgiving meals to the needy.

As I mentioned before, Crowdrise is more than a one-time transaction. It gave me the option of posting a notice about my donation to my Facebook profile, so that friends seeing it might give, too. Receipts I'd need for tax deductions are easily accessible from my account.

And on each fundraising page, including mine, is a huge button inviting donors to raise money for that cause, too.

The catch
Crowdrise tries to put the "fun" in fundraising. Getting people to part with their money isn't easy, particularly for ongoing needs that aren't revolved around a crisis continually in the news. Two weeks after the storm, many people have moved on. Contributions are slowing.

But Crowdrise does make it easier. I know that I'm more likely to give ? and give more ? when I'm supporting a friend's direct appeal. I love seeing that orange goal bar move closer to the 100 percent mark. I can only imagine that it's influencing others in a similar way.

The catch is that Crowdrise charges a fee on each transaction, at least 5 percent of the donation amount. Other fundraising sites do so as well, and when you're giving directly to a charity, there are similar amounts taken out for credit card processing and other costs. Crowdrise gives donors the option of paying a separate processing fee ? but doing so does nothing to increase the amount going to that particular charity. Rather, the for-profit startup says it keeps the money so that it can reduce fees overall.

That said, I'm reaching out to people who normally might not have given, either because they weren't thinking about it or didn't know whom to give to. Others might have given more knowing that I'm supporting the cause. So those extra donations more than cover the transaction fees.

Anick Jesdanun, deputy technology editor for The Associated Press, can be reached at njesdanun@ap.org.

Though the medical community remains split on whether or not Internet addiction exists, effects have been seen in both men and women who can't shut down their technology. "Both have substituted virtual friends and reality for real reality," said NBC's Dr. Nancy Snyderman.

Cosmic sprinklers explained

Friday, November 9, 2012

Astronomers using ESO's Very Large Telescope have discovered a pair of stars orbiting each other at the centre of one of the most remarkable examples of a planetary nebula. The new result confirms a long-debated theory about what controls the spectacular and symmetric appearance of the material flung out into space. The results are published in the 9 November 2012 issue of the journal Science.

Planetary nebulae are glowing shells of gas around white dwarfs -- Sun-like stars in the final stages of their lives. Fleming 1 is a beautiful example that has strikingly symmetric jets that weave into knotty, curved patterns. It is located in the southern constellation of Centaurus (The Centaur) and was discovered just over a century ago by Williamina Fleming, a former maid who was hired by Harvard College Observatory after showing an aptitude for astronomy.

Astronomers have long debated how these symmetric jets could be created, but no consensus has been reached. Now, a research team led by Henri Boffin (ESO, Chile) has combined new Very Large Telescope (VLT) observations of Fleming 1 with existing computer modelling to explain in detail for the first time how these bizarre shapes came about.

The team used ESO's VLT to study the light coming from the central star. They found that Fleming 1 is likely to have not one but two white dwarfs at its centre, circling each other every 1.2 days. Although binary stars have been found at the hearts of planetary nebulae before, systems with two white dwarfs orbiting each other are very rare.

"The origin of the beautiful and intricate shapes of Fleming 1 and similar objects has been controversial for many decades," says Henri Boffin. "Astronomers have suggested a binary star before, but it was always thought that in this case the pair would be well separated, with an orbital period of tens of years or longer. Thanks to our models and observations, which let us examine this unusual system in great detail and peer right into the heart of the nebula, we found the pair to be several thousand times closer."

When a star with a mass up to eight times that of the Sun approaches the end of its life, it blows off its outer shells and begins to lose mass. This allows the hot, inner core of the star to radiate strongly, causing this outward-moving cocoon of gas to glow brightly as a planetary nebula.

While stars are spherical, many of these planetary nebulae are strikingly complex, with knots, filaments, and intense jets of material forming intricate patterns. Some of the most spectacular nebulae -- including Fleming 1 -- present point-symmetric structures. For this planetary nebula it means that the material appears to shoot from both poles of the central region in S-shaped flows. This new study shows that these patterns for Fleming 1 are the result of the close interaction between a pair of stars -- the surprising swansong of a stellar couple.

"This is the most comprehensive case yet of a binary central star for which simulations have correctly predicted how it shaped the surrounding nebula -- and in a truly spectacular fashion," explains co-author Brent Miszalski, from SAAO and SALT (South Africa).

The pair of stars in the middle of this nebula is vital to explain its observed structure. As the stars aged, they expanded, and for part of this time, one acted as a stellar vampire, sucking material from its companion. This material then flowed in towards the vampire, encircling it with a disc known as an accretion disc. As the two stars orbited one another, they both interacted with this disc and caused it to behave like a wobbling spinning top -- a type of motion called precession. This movement affects the behaviour of any material that has been pushed outwards from the poles of the system, such as outflowing jets. This study now confirms that precessing accretion discs within binary systems cause the stunningly symmetric patterns around planetary nebulae like Fleming 1.

The deep images from the VLT have also led to the discovery of a knotted ring of material within the inner nebula. Such a ring of material is also known to exist in other families of binary systems, and appears to be a telltale signature of the presence of a stellar couple.

"Our results bring further confirmation of the role played by interaction between pairs of stars to shape, and perhaps even form, planetary nebulae," concludes Boffin.

(AP) ? Another week, another win, another reason for the Indianapolis Colts to love Andrew Luck.

Four days after setting a rookie record, Luck ran for two touchdowns and showed he could tackle and take a hard hit in a 27-10 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday night.

Luck help the Colts (6-3) win their fourth consecutive game and snap a three-game losing streak in the series.

"This win was huge," Luck said. "We wanted to keep our winning streak going. ... This is a good step in the right direction, but no one looks back at the fact that you were 6-3 in the middle of the season. It's what we do at the end of the season."

Coming off an NFL rookie record 433 yards passing against Miami, Luck wasn't quite as sharp in his prime-time debut. He didn't need to be, either.

Luck completed 18 of 26 passes for 227 yards, with an interception and a fumble. But he was unstoppable near the end zone, juking defenders with two pump fakes and scrambling for a 5-yard score on one drive and then plunging across the goal line on fourth down on the next possession.

Equally impressive was his toughness.

Luck made a diving tackle on safety Dawan Landry following an interception. Luck also bounced right back up after Landry hammered him as he started a slide late in the game. Landry was flagged and surely will be fined.

Luck's tackle, though, got all the attention.

"Not much to think about I guess," Luck said. "It was football instincts. You see the guy on the other team with the ball, you're going to try and tackle him. If I'm going to be the one who turns the ball over, I'm going to at least try and stop the guy."

That might not be the wisest decision for the team's franchise player.

"I was afraid he was going to try and take his head off," interim coach Brice Arians said. "He gets ticked off when he throws those interceptions."

There wasn't much else for Indy to be upset about.

Indianapolis scored on three consecutive possessions in the first half, opening up a 17-0 lead that started emptying the stands at EverBank Field.

That was plenty against the Jaguars (1-8), who have the league's worst offense and played a third game without star running back Maurice Jones-Drew.

Jacksonville has lost six in a row since a come-from-behind victory at Indianapolis. Blaine Gabbert hit Cecil Shorts III for an 80-yard touchdown in the final minute, stunning the Colts.

There was no drama in the rematch.

The Colts essentially sealed the victory when Darius Butler stepped in front of Gabbert's pass in the flat and went untouched for an 11-yard interception return for a touchdown early in the third quarter.

"It was an anticipated thing," Butler said. "It was something I had seen those guys do on film, so I was ready for it and jumped in front of him. I knew they wanted to get the ball out quick. I was ready for it and went for it. A great feeling."

Indianapolis became just the third road team to win on Thursday night this season, and just the fifth in the last two seasons.

It certainly helped playing Jacksonville.

The Jaguars have been outscored 153-44 at home this season, on the wrong end of lopsided losses to Houston, Cincinnati, Chicago and Detroit.

Against Indy, nothing seemed to go Jacksonville's way.

There were several dropped passes. Josh Scobee missed a 44-yard field goal attempt, snapping a streak of 20 consecutive makes. The Jaguars had an interception overturned by a roughing the passer penalty, keeping alive a drive that ended in a touchdown.

They also were on the losing end of two reviews.

"We're trying to overcome ourselves," coach Mike Mularkey said. "We have to overcome ourselves. When we do that, we'll start winning games."

Laurent Robinson fumbled at the end of a 9-yard gain, getting the ball stripped by Moise Fokou. Officials initially ruled Robinson was down, but the call was overturned on review. That turnover led to Indy's second touchdown and prompted Mularkey's meltdown on the sideline.

Mularkey lost his cool when officials refused to acknowledge his pleas for a review on Luck's fourth-down TD plunge. Luck appeared to fumble the ball as he crossed the goal line.

Mularkey wanted officials to take a longer look at the scoring play. He whipped his play sheet and headset onto the field, drawing a flag for unsportsmanlike conduct.

"I lost my composure," Mularkey said. "I certainly thought the review would see what everybody else saw."

Players followed his lead, getting flagged for five more 15-yard penalties. The Jaguars finished the night with 10 penalties for 115 yards.

"That's not going to be who we are," Mularkey said. "There's no way we're going to be that way. We will not be that type of team. We will be a disciplined team, we'll be a smart team and we will be a physical team. But we will not be that team that's going to have personal fouls. It will stop."

Gabbert completed 18 of 31 passes for 209 yards, with an interception. He left the game in the fourth quarter after re-injuring his non-throwing shoulder. He could have returned, but Mularkey decided to keep him on the bench.

"We're so close but so far at the same time," Gabbert said. "We get drives going and we have to make a play and we haven't done that. We definitely didn't do that tonight."

Quiet prayer on Capitol Hill in noisy election day | Strange ...

St. Mark?s Cathedral on Tuesday offered citizens a quiet 12-hour-long election day refuge from jabbering TV pundits, the last nasty negative ads, sign-waving candidates, nonstop robo calls, and ceaseless e-mails with phony petitions and appeals for campaign cash.

The Episcopal cathedral atop Capitol Hill opened doors of its Thomsen Chapel to those wishing to pray for America, an understandable emotion in view of the nasty campaign America has just lived through.

St. Mark's Cathedra Dean, the Very Rev. Steven Thomason, with his wife Kathy.

The cathedral?s new dean, the Very Rev. Steven Thomason, led a small congregation in a civics-oriented noonday prayer service.? Its appeals:

?O Lord our Governor, bless the leaders of our land, that we may be a people at peace among ourselves and a blessing to other nations of the Earth.? Lord, keep this nation under your care.

?To the President and members of the Cabinet, to Governors of States, Mayors of Cities and to all in administrative authority, grant wisdom and grace in the exercise of our duties.? Give grace to your servants, O Lord.

?To Senators and Representatives, and those who make our laws in States, Cities and Towns, give courage, wisdom and foresight to provide for the needs of all our people and to fulfill our obligations in the community of nations.? Give grace to your servants, O Lord.

?To the Judges and officers of our Courts, give understanding and integrity, that human rights may be safeguarded and justice served.? Give grace to your servants, O Lord.

?And finally, teach our people to rely on your strength and to accept their responsibilities to their fellow citizens, that they may elect trustworthy leaders and make wise decisions for the well-being of our society; that we may serve you faithfully in our generation and? honor your holy Name.?

Religion has played a major role in Campaign 2012.? Nationally, conservative Catholic bishops have campaigned from their pulpits against such alleged Obama sins as requiring that contraceptive coverage be included in health care plans for women.? A group of liberal Catholic women religious, the ?Nuns on the Bus,? have taken to the road protesting deep cuts in social services in a budget authored by Republican vice presidential nominee Rep. Paul Ryan.

In this state, Catholic bishops and fundamentalist congregations have campaigned against same-sex marriage.? Mainline Protestant and Jewish leaders, along with a lay group called Catholics for Marriage Equality, have supported marriage equality.

None of this intruded at Thomsen Chapel on Tuesday.? Instead, there was liturgical language that carried a message to all in the country:

?Bless our land with honorable industry, sound learning and pure manners.? Save us from violence, discord and confusion; from pride and arrogance, and from every evil way.? Defend our liberties, and fashion us into one? united people.?

Iran to strengthen naval presence over disputed islands

DUBAI | Sun Nov 4, 2012 10:54am EST

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran will increase its naval presence in the Gulf to strengthen its authority over three islands which the United Arab Emirates says are its territory, Tehran said on Sunday.

The islands sit near oil shipping routes at the mouth of the strategic Strait of Hormuz and the challenge over their sovereignty is a constant threat to Iran's fragile relations with its Arab neighbors.

"The security of the Iranian islands in the Persian Gulf is part of the various strategies of the naval force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps," IRGC Commander Mohammad Ali Jafari said, according to the website of state television IRIB.

Jafari was speaking at a ceremony inaugurating a fifth "naval defense zone" at the port of Bandar Lengeh. He said the IRGC was "increasing, expanding and improving the expert capability in naval defense" in the five zones.

"The fifth zone of the Guards' naval force is one of the naval defense chains which is in particular responsible for the defense of the Iranian islands in the Persian Gulf," he said.

The 41-year-old dispute between Shi'ite Muslim Iran and the Sunni UAE over the islands - Greater and Lesser Tunb and Abu Musa - has nationalist and ethnic overtones and was inflamed when President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad visited Abu Musa in April.

In September, UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahayan said Iran's "occupation" of the three islands was against international law.

Last month Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said Tehran would consider downgrading ties with the UAE over the dispute, although the foreign ministry later denied the report, according to state television.

Kids' Science Books For Stormy Weather

Like many families in the path of superstorm Sandy, we've spent much of the last week indoors trying to stay sane. Fortunately, we live in a part of Brooklyn that was spared the worst storm damage, so I had the luxury of finally reading the children's science books that have been piling up on my desk at work. Where appropriate, I've also included reactions from my 6 year old daughter, Eliza, who read many of them with me. (Somehow, I had the foresight to bring all the books home last weekend before Sandy blew out the power at our Scientific American offices, which remained closed all last week). Here are my favorites: Infinity and Me, by Kate Hosford. Even the littlest children will appreciate this picture book about a girl who asks her friends and family how they imagine infinity. A friend says it's like a racetrack shaped like the infinity symbol: cars go around the track forever. Her grandmother says it's like a family tree that goes on and on. It prompted Eliza to wonder, "What is infinity minus one?" The other night she also pondered a question that comes straight from the book: If you have recess for infinity, is it still recess? (Her answer: No, it's just playtime.) Unusual Creatures, by Michael Hearst. Eliza and I have been reading a few pages of this playful, meticulously illustrated book every night this week, and we both love it. Hearst profiles some 50 animals, including giant salamanders, strange looking fish, and exotic rodents and marsupials. At times, I've wished that the book were more information dense and less eager-to-entertain, as in this sentence: "I really hope at least a few of these unusual creatures make you stop and say, "Whoa, dude! What's up with that?" But I do appreciate Hearst's enthusiasm for his subject, which comes through on every page. Like "Infinity and Me," the book is a terrific conversation starter, and it has made Eliza wonder, for example, why parts of Africa and Australia seem to have many more 'unusual creatures' than the United States. I'm also glad she now knows that Madagascar is more than just a place where talking zoo animals get stranded in movies. Albert Einstein and Relativity for Kids: His Life and Ideas with 21 Activities and Thought Experiments, by Jerome Pohlen. (Ages 9 and up). This is a wonderfully accessible biography for children that does not talk down to its young readers. Parents who follow along with them will be reminded of Einstein's myriad contributions to science and come away with a far clearer understanding of them. Pohlen grounds Einstein's breakthroughs in the politics of the times, from the rise of the Nazis and the persecution of Jews; to the development of the nuclear bomb, which Einstein at first supported and later regretted; to the formation of Israel, which unsuccessfully tried to recruit Einstein as president. Most importantly, Pohlen clearly delineates Einstein's breakthroughs - from his understanding of light as a wave and a particle, to his papers on the size of atoms, to special and general relativity. He also provides simple home experiments to help kids master such concepts as capillary action (the force the pulls a liquid "up" a tube), the speed of light, and gravity's effect on light. A Rock is Lively, by Dianna Hutts Aston. "A rock is lively ... bubbling like a pot of soup deep beneath the earth's crust ... liquid ... molten ... boiling," writes Aston. Along with illustrator Sylvia Long, Aston brings geology to life, mixing scientific facts ("a rock melts at temperatures between 1,300 and 2,400 degrees Fahrenheit"), with an engaging prose style that covers asteroids, arrowheads and the surprising fact that some animals swallow rocks to help them digest food or to dive more deeply in water. Eliza liked comparing the painted rocks in Aston and Long's book with the photos in our DK Eyewitness book "Rocks & Minerals." The two make a great combination. I wanted to also mention two older books that we returned to this past week and that we have read again and again. If your kids are just learning the planets, "When is a Planet Not a Planet? The Story of Pluto" by Elaine Scott is a great read for kids as well as for parents who attended school long before Pluto's demotion. It traces the history of astronomy from the ancient Greeks, who first noticed planets "wandering" from east to west in the night sky against a backdrop of stars (planetes, in Greek, means wanderers), to Pluto's reclassification as a dwarf planet in 2006. Finally, "Relics: Travels in Nature's Time Machine," by the Harvard entomologist Piotr Naskrecki, is not a kids' book and yet kids will love it. Naskrecki travels the world, camera in hand, documenting known creatures and discovering many new ones. Children will love his tales of adventure in places like New Guinea and the Limpopo province of South Africa as well as his photos of some truly unusual creatures, like a horned frog that looks exactly like a dry leaf, and a katydid (a relative of the grasshopper) that deters predators by spraying them with its blood. Writes Naskrecki in one of my favorite passages: "I could never quite understand why such a tactic should work - after all, the predator is planning to put the insect, blood and all, in its mouth; why would a little taste of the future meal act as a deterrent? But having been squirted more than once I now understand - a quick squirt startles the predator, which gives the katydid time to arch its back and fully expose its sharp spines." Support for jihadists in Syria swells as U.S. backing of rebels falls short

When asked about the role of Islamic jihadists in Syria's long-burning civil war, an Aleppo hospital doctor recalled what prompted one Syrian to join their ranks.

The man had returned to his house one day to find it destroyed by a bomb, his wife and children among the dead. "Give me one reason why I should not join the jihadists!" the man cried, recalls the doctor. "They will give me my revenge, while all the rest of the world drinks a cup of tea and says, 'Oh, it's so sad.' "

Aleppo has become the crucible of the 20-month rebellion against the rule of President Bashar al-Assad. But despite a rising death toll and a shared aim of removing the Syrian leader, US officials have stopped short of giving decisive support to rebel forces, citing fears that weapons and cash would find their way to Islamist fighters ? many of them from abroad ? with an anti-US agenda who have joined the fight.

RELATED ? In key Syrian city, snipers and bombing tear at fabric of daily life

Still, as the desperation in Syria mounts, with tens of thousands dead and no end to the conflict in sight, rebel commanders say the American effort to limit rebel capabilities may be spurring exactly what the US hoped to avoid, by extending the war and deepening the influence of Islamist fighters.

Some are Syrians looking for unbridled revenge by joining Islamist units that routinely take on frontline combat. Many others are foreign fighters coming from places as diverse as Chechnya and Iraq, where they often have had past combat experience.

Rebels have received small arms, ammunition, and communications gear from the US and other sources. Yet heavier equipment has not arrived, such as surface-to-air missiles, which rebel commanders say would turn the tide of battle in their favor by stopping Syrian aircraft and helicopters from bombing rebel-controlled territory.

Arming the rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA), or not, has become a hot US presidential election issue. In the final debate last week, President Obama said the US was doing ?everything we can? to help the opposition, but warned that ?to get more entangled militarily in Syria is a serious step,? and that the US had to be ?absolutely certain that we know who we are helping.?

Likewise, Republican candidate Mitt Romney said he would ?make sure they have the arms necessary to defend themselves,? as long as weapons don?t get into ?the wrong hands. Those arms could be used to hurt us down the road.?

But on the ground, many Syrians say the US reluctance to support their cause is yielding more jihadists, and more radical ones.

And it's questionable whether American reluctance is significantly hampering the flow of weapons to jihadists.

"If the Americans do not give us weapons, then the jihadists will get them from somewhere else," says Abu Baraa, a local Aleppo commander. In his view, current US policy "has opened the doors for jihadist Islam, not for moderates.?

Another result, often voiced in this embattled city, is that even though the US shares rebel aims, its limited support for the fight itself has ignited widespread anger toward Washington ? and even prompted speculation that the US wants the Syrian regime to win.

"Before the revolution, there were no Al Qaeda here," says Abu Mohammed, the doctor. "When this regime makes these crimes, they come, and come to help.

"The US says their [pro-democracy line only]; Al Qaeda says, 'We will help.' So what do we do, smile to the US and kick out Al Qaeda?" he adds. "The longer [the war] takes, the more of them there will be."

US IS MAKING 'EXCUSES'

American reluctance to help more in Syria is partly due to uncertainty about Syria's future, especially because the 2011 regime changes in Tunisia, Egypt, and Libya are far from settled.

Strategically, the US also sees through the prism of Afghanistan in the 1980s, when the CIA provided Stinger missiles and training to anti-Soviet mujahideen fighters, only to watch them eventually morph into anti-American militant groups such as Al Qaeda.

The geopolitical stakes are high in Syria, too, where Russian, Chinese, and Iranian support for the regime ? along with that of the Lebanese Shiite militant group Hezbollah ? has ensured the longest and most lethal anti-regime battle so far of the Arab uprisings.

"We hoped the American government would help us in our revolution, because it fights for the democratic flag in the world ? and toppled Saddam Hussein in the name of democracy," says a Syrian judge who runs a temporary court in a rebel-controlled district of Aleppo. He gave his name as Abu Ibrahim.

"But Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton did nothing. America failed us," says the secular Syrian, whose tailored suit and pressed shirt contrasted sharply with the motley collection of rebels who man the frontline a few streets away. "This whole thing about jihadists is an excuse not to support us."

"The jihadists in Aleppo are so few, and we take them as a burden. We don't need them, we need their weapons, their fighters," Abu Ibrahim says. "We are ashamed to tell them to get out. They came to fight with us and we must appreciate that. We can't stop them because the West has not come to help."

WE 'NEED' AL QAEDA

Rebel commanders say that Washington's fears are overblown, and that Syrians will not accept any future control by a minority of Islamist ideologues.

"The Americans have Islamophobia. They are afraid of any Muslim, and think he's a copy of Osama bin Laden," says Sheikh Mahmoud Mujadami, a cleric and rebel commander in a western district of Aleppo.

"If the Americans study Islam, they would see many shared things: justice, democracy, problem-solving," says Mr. Mujadami. "The jihadists are so few, and they don't know anything of the religion of Islam. They have a brain like a rock; they can't change their thinking. [But] they are strong in the field."

The Americans, he says, are "mistaken" about the threat posed by them. Even rebel commanders who present an overtly religious face assert that Islamic radicalism can't take root in Syria ? and that their top priority now is ending Assad's rule.

"The jihadis are 10 percent of the FSA. They are strong in the field, they think they are defending Muslims in Syria ? they will never fight Syrians or cause trouble," says Abu Baraa, the local Aleppo commander, who sports a thick beard. On the wall in his headquarters in a downtown school is a 3-ft.-tall gilt replica of the door of the Kaaba, the monument in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, toward which every Muslim faces for daily prayers. Military-green cloth hangs on either side of the large golden Kaaba door to resemble the material draped on the monument. Folded prayer mats are nearby.

"Now [jihadists] are helping us, and we are grateful. That man is fighting for me, and I respect that," says Abu Baraa. "The jihadists say, 'When we finish here, we will go elsewhere.' They are not from Al Qaeda, they are defending Muslims."

Abu Baraa says the US "doesn't care how many Syrians die ? for them we are like bugs."

Meanwhile, current US policy has been a gift for jihadists, he argues. It "has opened the doors for jihadist Islam, not for moderates," Abu Baraa says.

"The jihadis here do not have hatred of Americans. They believe in helping people who are suffering and enslaved," he adds, noting that the anti-US insurgency in Iraq was fueled by the 2003 invasion, and events such as abuses at Abu Ghraib prison.

"You have to know the difference between jihadists and Al Qaeda," he says. "There are some Al Qaeda fighters here, but we need them now."

World record for entanglement of twisted light quanta

ScienceDaily (Nov. 2, 2012) ? The Vienna research team led by Anton Zeilinger has achieved a new milestone in the history of quantum physics: The scientists were able to generate and measure the entanglement of the largest quantum numbers to date.

To this end, the researchers developed a new method for entangling single photons which gyrate in opposite directions. This result is a first step towards entangling and twisting even macroscopic, spatially separated objects in two different directions. The researchers at the Vienna Center for Quantum Science and Technology (VCQ), situated at the University of Vienna, and the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information (IQOQI) at the Austrian Academy of Sciences have were able to get their pioneering results published in the current issue of the scientific journal Science.

Quantum physics is usually considered to be the theory of extremely lightweight objects, such as atoms or photons, or of exceptionally small units, namely very small quantum numbers. One of the most fascinating phenomena of quantum physics is that of entanglement. Entangled quanta of light behave as if able to influence each other -- even as they are spatially separated. The question of whether or not entanglement is limited to tiny objects or very small quantum numbers came up already in the early days of quantum physics. Now, the Vienna group has taken the first step for testing quantum mechanical entanglement with rotating photons. To illustrate, a quantum mechanical figure skater would have the uncanny ability to pirouette both clockwise and counter-clockwise simultaneously. Moreover, the direction of her rotations would be correlated with the twirls of another, entangled, skater -- even if the two ice dancers whirl far removed from each other, in ice rinks on different continents. The faster the two quantum skaters pirouette, the larger is the quantum number of their rotation direction, the so-called angular momentum. "In our experiment, we entangled the largest quantum numbers of any kind of particle ever measured," declares Zeilinger with a wry smile.

Could quantum ice dancers exist in reality?

It has been common knowledge for about 20 years now that theoretically, there is no upper limit for the angular momentum of photons. Previous experiments, however, have been limited, due to physical restrictions, to very weak angular momentum and small quantum numbers. In the Vienna experiment, it is theoretically possible to create entanglement regardless of the strength of the angular momentum or the scale of its quantum number. "Only our limited technical means stop us from creating entanglement with twisted photons that could be sensed even with bare hands," states Robert Fickler, the main author of the current Science publication. And so, the researchers have demonstrated that it is possible in principle to twirl entangled ice skaters simultaneously both in clockwise and counter-clockwise directions. In practice, a number of major challenges need to be addressed before such an experiment can be realized with macroscopic objects.

From fundamental research to technical applications

In addition to the fundamental issue of the limits of macroscopic entanglement, the physicists address possibilities of potential applications. They are, for example, able to use the created photons for very precise angular measurements already at low intensities of light. This feature is of advantage in particular when investigating light sensitive materials, as for example some biological substances. "The special features of entanglement provide the fantastic possibility to perform such measurements from arbitrary distances and without any contact whatsoever with the measured object, or even at a point in time that lies in the future!" Fickler explains.

This research was supported by the European Research Council (ERC) and the Austrian Science Fund (FWF).
